Live Map Switching is an end user feature developed by M-Engineering and only available with M-Tuner! Map Switching allows for the storage of up to 4 separate calibrations on the ecu at one time which can then be chosen on the fly, while the engine is running, by using the cruise control stalk in a matter of moments. A few simple flicks of the cruise control stalk can have you switching from your pump gas file or your race gas file. No need to pull out your laptop or flashing device each time you need to change gas types.

Map Switching Basics

  • Map Switching is easily done in a matter of seconds and can be done while the car is running.

  • To enter Map Switching mode the following condition must be met

    • The vehicle must not be moving, speed must read 0 mph.

    • Pressure must be applied to your brakes (foot on the brake pedal).

    • Cruise Control must be in ready mode

      • You’ll know if cruise control is ready when you have this symbol displayed on the dash:

        • To ensure cruise control is ready press the button on the tip of the cruise control stalk or consult your owner’s manual.

  • If the above entry conditions are met, you can use the cruise control stalk and engine tachometer to navigate map slots

    • Pushing +speed/set on the cruise control stalk (towards the dash) will enter map switching mode and display the current map slot on the dash (Map Slot 1 is 1000RPM, Map Slot 2 is 2000RPM, etc…).  Map switching mode will exit automatically after 2 seconds of inactivity.

      • Engine Speed on the tach will temporarily sweep to 0 RPM for .5 seconds before showing the map slot when initially pushed.  This is by design and was made to help distinguish that Map Slot 1 is selected when the car is idling.

    • While in map switching mode pushing the cruise control stalk up (Resume) will increase the map slot, as displayed on the tach.  Pushing the stalk down (Off) will decrease the map slot.

    • Inactivity for more than 2 seconds after selecting your map slot will exit map switching mode.

Further Map Switching Info

  • Map Slot selections will persist after keying off.

    • e.g. If you shut the car down on map slot 2, it will remember the map slot indefinitely and resume in map slot 2 when you restart the car.

  • Map Slots are often made with different octanes in mind.  Always pay close attention to which map slot you are in when changing fuels.  Never run a map slot designed for high octane fuel with a low octane fuel in the tank!  Higher octane fuel is generally more stable and resistant to knock.  Higher octane fuel allows for advanced ignition timing and leaner lambda targets than lower octane fuel.  Engine damage may occur if map switching is used improperly.

Checking Your Map Slot

  • You can always check the map slot simply by pushing +speed/set on the cruise control stalk (towards the dashdriver) when the vehicle is stopped. You can not check your map slot while cruise control is armed and actively controlling vehicle speed.

Standard OTS Map Slots

The 991.2 OTS Maps from M-Tuner come standard as shown below for Stage 1 and Stage 2 setups. If you want to rearrange these slots or add a 4th slot, ProTuning can be purchased and arranged with us.

Slot 1 - 91 Octane or 95 RON

Slot 5 - Engine Safety (Detonation Defense or Clutch Slip (Manual trans)).

Engine Safety Map Slot (Slot 5)

M-Engineering has written custom code for additional engine safeties beyond was is provided from the factory. Our engine tuning strategy has always been for engine safety first, and power second. This has allowed us to maintain vehicle reliability and have the most powerful calibrations on the market proven time and time again in competitive racing series, at the drag strip, and setting world records at Pikes Peak.

Our custom code has allowed us to implement what is called “Detonation Defense” which is an engine safety that detects excessive knock events. When knock events beyond a set threshold are met, within 20 milliseconds, the car will automatically be put into map slot 5 for a brief period of 10 seconds. In map slot 5, the car will have reduced power and engine load to prevent damage. This proactive approach protects your engine and allows power to return once conditions are again safe.

For Manual Transmission cars, we have also added an engine safety which detects excessive clutch slip. So in the event of slip happening, the car again will automatically put itself into map slot 5 for ten seconds with reduced engine load and power.

Note

Never let map switching distract you from operating your vehicle safely!

Warning

If the engine is in the OFF position while checking map slots or changing slots, an engine error may appear on the dashboard. This is normal and will disappear after changing or checking slots.
