Instructions

Step 1: Preparation

Begin by putting the spoiler into the raised “up” position by selecting the “Spoiler extended” option on the “Drive” menu screen.

Then, open both the frunk and the engine lid.

Next, remove the oil cap and lift off the engine shroud. After removing the shroud, reinstall the oil cap to prevent any debris from falling in during the process.

Roll down your driver’s side window all the way. (The purpose for this is the glass moving up and down automatically with the door opening which will not function without battery power.)
Remove the negative ground strap to the battery (10mm).

Step 2: Remove Engine Fans

After removing the engine shroud you will now have access to the engine fans. First, pop up both fans, then remove both electrical connectors by pulling on the red clip and pressing down and out; finally, pull both fans out.  This will then allow you to start the removal of the taillights and spoiler.

Step 3: Remove Upper Tail Lights

Pop off the plastic tail light covers to access the tail lights (one on each side).

Use a T30 Torx bit to remove the six (6) screws (three per side) securing the upper tail lights.

Next, disconnect the green upper tail light wiring connectors and gently remove the housings from both sides. You might want a second person to assist. Take your time here to avoid scratching the lenses or surrounding paint. Using some masking tape on your paint can be helpful to prevent scratching.

Step 4: Remove Hardware and Disconnect Wiring

Now we move onto removing the lower tail lights and the spoiler. Start by removing the two (2) T30 screws on the bumper trim. Then remove the two (2) T30 screws securing the tail light brackets. Use a T45 Torx to remove the four (4) bolts that mount the spoiler.

After that, disconnect the decklid actuator wiring and the main spoiler wiring connectors.

Step 5: Remove Lower Tail Light.

Use a flathead screwdriver to push down the locking tab under each of the tail lights.

While holding down the tab, pull out lower tail light housing; this may require some force. To avoid scratching the paint, we recommend applying some masking tape along the edges of the tail light before removal. After pulling the lower tail light, disconnect the brown connector to finalize this step.

Step 6: Remove Spoiler

Make sure the spoiler mounting tabs on both sides are pulled out and out of the way.

Once everything is loose and unplugged, carefully lift and remove the spoiler from the car. This can be done with one person, but is easier with two.

Step 7: Disconnect ECU wiring

With the spoiler removed, you now have access to the ECU, which is tucked away on the right side of the engine bay. Start by disconnecting the two main power connectors going into the right side of the engine bay (located to the right of the ECU). Note that these two connectors are an option to remove, but removing them makes this easier for more workable space.

Don’t forget to plug these back in during reinstall!

Use a 10mm socket to remove the two nuts holding the ECU bracket in place. Remove the water shield that covers the main harness, then disconnect all six (6) ECU connectors. These may take some effort, go slowly and make sure the tabs are fully released before pulling. To get these connectors off, you will need to press down on the black centered tab and pull the white release lever forward. Do these connectors from left to right. They are color coded as well.

Step 8: Remove the ECU

After disconnecting all of the ECU connectors, carefully remove the ECU out of the engine bay. It may take some finesse to get it out of the engine bay. Finish by removing the metal mounting bracket using a T30 Torx to remove the four (4) bracket screws.

Firing Up for the First Time

Before starting the car for the first time after ECU reinstall, it is important to clear any faults. Faults will be present due to the ECU removal.

  1. Connect the M-Tuner dongle to the OBD2 port in the car and to your laptop.

  2. Power the car “ON” but engine off. The dash should be lit up.

  3. With M-Tuner software open on your computer showing “connected”, hit the “Read Info” button. This will them prompt the auto-licensing pop up window. Here you can input any information you like.

  1. Once you have auto-licensed M-Tuner, hit the “Clear Faults” button. When the fault clearing has finished wait 10 seconds, then key the car “OFF” for 10 seconds.

  1. Fire up the car and enjoy the new tune! At this point you can also select the desired map slot based on the octane you have filled up with. Map Switching Instructions can be found here.
